The University of Arizona’s (UArizona) College of Medicine – Tucson (COM–T) seeks a dynamic, nationally recognized leader to serve as the next chief of the Division of CT Surgery. Reporting directly to the Chair of the Department of Surgery, Geoffrey Gurtner, MD., the chief will work collaboratively with the leaders of COM–T and Banner – University Medicine to build upon excellence in existing clinical, teaching, and team-based research programs and position the division for growth and transformation. The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is housed within the Department of Surgery. The faculty within the division currently cover the continuum of cardiothoracic surgical care, including adult cardiovascular disease, pediatric and adult congenital heart disease, valvular heart disease, complex aortic surgery, endovascular repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms, endovascular valve replacements, complex thoracic surgical oncology, minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery, and surgical treatment of end-stage heart disease, including ventricular assist devices, heart transplantation, and lung transplantation. Faculty provide clinical services and mentor trainees at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson, Banner – University Medical Center South, and Diamond Children's Medical Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The next chief of the Division of CT Surgery will have the opportunity to provide strategic leadership and direction for the growth of the division. He or she will set a clear vision and execute on this vision. This division chief will have the opportunity to advance the division through multidisciplinary clinical care, advanced and innovative surgical services, research, education, and service.
  • The chief will inspire, develop, and lead an accomplished team of faculty and mentor trainees, drive the development of clinical programs, and create accountability in the division. He or she is expected to exhibit leadership and consensus-building within and beyond the division and the department. To elevate the division to the next level, this leader will be expected to strategically recruit and retain talented faculty to support clinical growth, expand the division’s research footprint, improve the national reputation of CT surgery at UArizona and Banner Health, and ensure excellence in the education and training of medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Provide clinical services and mentor trainees at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson, Banner – University Medical Center South.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be a Professor or Associate Professor
  • Be an outstanding academic leader with a national/international reputation as an accomplished clinician, investigator, and educator.
  • Have a proven, substantial, and progressive leadership experience in an academic medical center.
  • Have a track record of building relationships with community-based providers and working in complex systems.
  • Have the ability to engage faculty, mentor the careers of others, and collaborate within a complex health care system.
  • Hold an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent medical degree.
  • Be board-certified by the American Board of Surgery.
  • Be eligible for medical licensure in Arizona.

Preferred Qualifications:  * Have completed a CT Surgery fellowship or equivalent training.* Have a proven track record in building and sustaining an extramurally funded research program. * Experience in cardiac transplantation.
