Description

The incumbent physician is expected to provide comprehensive patient care in the form of invasive, non-invasive, consultative, and inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular care with special focus on cardiac electrophysiology. The incumbent is accountable to the Chief of Cardiology assuring the most effective delivery of care in Cardiology services.


Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following functions:

  • The Cardiology Physician clinical activity will be approved by the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff clinical privileging process. Invasive and noninvasive cardiovascular procedures, both performance and interpretation, will be paramount. These will certainly include the following: performance of electrophysiologic procedures, ablations, and cardiac rhythm management device surgeries, clinical care of the intensive care unit patient and clinical care of outpatients. A broad spectrum of cardiovascular testing will be involved.
  • Provides direct hands-on patient care. Assesses patients for acute illnesses and determines whether patients need to be admitted to the hospital or managed in the outpatient setting. Manages chronic disease over time as well, to provide continuity care.
  • Ensures accurate documentation of medical assessments and observations. Completion of all patient care encounters.
  • Responsible for supervising and teaching cardiology fellows, medical residents, and students. Will be required to oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
  • Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patientcare.
  • From time-to-time cares for veterans referred from within the VA system or from non-VA facilities.
  • Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication.
  • Provides appropriate explanation to the patient/family member and involves other extenders in this process. Evaluates effectiveness and level of patient/family member understanding of teaching provider in order to provide additional resources.
  • Utilizes the VA EMR, currently CPRS computer software/program for entering and signing of medical orders such as laboratory studies, radiological studies, additional consults etc. Timely completion of VA mandated training programs, including information security, radiation, sedation, BLS and ALS modules.
  • Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all procedures.
  • Ensures a safe work environment and employee safe work habits, as well as completion of required trainings.
  • Participates in cardiology section call and work duty schedule as assigned by supervisor.
